How to get Home Lab Licenses to run either vSphere Standard Edition or VCF

VMUG Advantage is a membership program designed for VMware enthusiasts and IT professionals seeking cost-effective access to training, discounts on certifications, and extended license durations for personal labs. It’s an important piece of the puzzle if you’re looking to move from simply running a single VMware product to deploying a complete Cloud Foundation environment—particularly because VCF licensing can be unlocked once you have both VMUG Advantage and the relevant VCP certification.

Quick Overview

  1. Pick Your Target License
    • vSphere Standard (32 cores for 1 year): Earn it by passing the VCP-VVF or VCP-VCF exam.
    • VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) (128 cores for 3 years): Pass the VCP-VCF exam and hold an active VMUG Advantage membership.
  2. Get VMUG Advantage
    • Go to VMUG Advantage to purchase a membership and link it to the same email address you’ll use for your certification.
  3. Prepare and Take the Exam
  4. Obtain Your Broadcom Certification License
    • Receive an email with your completion certificate and a link to the Broadcom Certification License Portal after passing the exam.
    • Log in with the same email address you used to register for the certification exam.
  5. Choose and Download
    • Request the license you qualify for (VCF or vSphere) by clicking the “Not Requested” icon.
    • Wait for the “Pending” status to change to confirm processing, which can take a few hours.
    • After another 4–6 hours, your license keys and product downloads become available.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

1. Recognize Your License Choices

  • vSphere Standard Edition (32 cores, 1-year term)
    Earned by passing either:
    • VCP-VVF (administrator/architect)
    • VCP-VCF (administrator/architect)
  • VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) (128 cores, 3-year term)
    Requires:
    • Valid VMUG Advantage membership
    • VCP-VCF exam pass

Hint: If you plan on fully exploring Cloud Foundation at home, aim for the VCP-VCF exam while maintaining a VMUG Advantage membership. This ensures you get the 128-core, 3-year personal license.

Important Notes

  1. The date of your license is pegged to the day you pass your exam—not when you buy VMUG Advantage.
  2. This license is for personal use only—it cannot be used in any commercial, production, or other work environment.
  3. If you’re a Broadcom employee, you aren’t eligible for this license program but can inquire about the company’s employee-specific licenses.
  4. If you pass only VCP-VVF, you’re limited to vSphere Standard Edition.

2. Purchase and Align Your VMUG Advantage

Visit vmug.com/advantage to buy an annual membership. Make sure the email address on your VMUG profile matches the one you plan to use for your VMware certification. A mismatch can cause delays:

You’ll need to sign up and pay for your VCP exam at Broadcom’s VMware Certification Portal. Don’t forget:

  • Use the VMUG Advantage discount code for 50% off if you’re taking the VCP-VCF exam.

4. Access Your Completion Certificate & License Portal

Once you pass, you’ll get an email with your certification details and a link to the Broadcom Certification License Portal. Log in there using the exact same email you used for the exam.

5. Request Your New License Keys

In the portal, you’ll notice two main license types depending on what you qualified for:

  1. VCF-CLD-FND-5 128 License
    • Available if you passed VCP-VCF and hold VMUG Advantage.
  2. VCF-VSP-STD-8 32 License
    • Available if you passed the VCP-VVF or do not have VMUG Advantage.

Click “Not Requested” in the top right corner of the product tile, which changes to “Pending.” You’ll get an email once it’s processed; then wait another few hours for everything to finalize.

6. Download Keys & Products

Once your order is processed:

  1. Grab Your Keys:
    Look for the ribbon icon at the bottom right (it might be subtle). Click it to view and copy your license keys.
  2. Get the Products:
    After saving your keys, click the download icon to access installers for vSphere Standard or VCF.

Patch Access Caveat
Without a Broadcom corporate site ID, you can’t get patches for these products. You’ll only be able to download the standard update releases—not patches or other site-ID-protected downloads.

7. Engage with VMUG and Community Resources
