VMware Explore 2024 Barcelona: A Deep Dive into Day-by-Day Highlights

Barcelona was abuzz this November as VMware Explore 2024 transformed the Fira Gran Via into a dynamic center of technology, innovation, and collaboration. Spanning four immersive days, the event offered unparalleled insights into private cloud, artificial intelligence, edge computing, and beyond. Here’s a detailed look at each day’s highlights, including two of my own sessions on Day 3 that explored automation and community advocacy.


Day 1: The Grand Kickoff

The opening day of VMware Explore 2024 welcomed attendees with the unveiling of an expanded Expo and Community Zones. These spaces became central hubs throughout the week, featuring hands-on demonstrations, networking opportunities, and exclusive talks.

Highlights:

  • The Expo: A vibrant showcase of VMware’s ecosystem, featuring new technologies, solutions, and partner integrations.
  • Community Zone: Sessions at the {code} Theater and Community Theater kept the audience engaged with live demos and technical discussions.
  • Welcome Reception: Flamenco dancers ushered in the evening festivities, where attendees mingled over an impressive array of snacks, wine, and cerveza.

Day 2: Groundbreaking Announcements and Insightful Sessions

Day 2 kicked off with the General Session, where VMware and Broadcom executives revealed new advancements in private AI and cloud technologies.

Key Announcements:

  1. VMware Cloud Foundation: Simplifies IT operations by merging public cloud scalability with private cloud security.
  2. Private AI Approach: Enables organizations to harness the power of AI while safeguarding sensitive data within private infrastructures.

Attendees were spoiled for choice with breakout sessions featuring industry leaders like Chris Wolf (private AI and VMware Cloud Foundation) and Sanjay Uppal (software-defined edge innovation). The Virtually Speaking Podcast also recorded live episodes, allowing participants to interact with the hosts.


Day 3: A Packed Agenda and My Featured Sessions

Day 3 delivered a treasure trove of technical knowledge, hands-on experiences, and engaging discussions. Among the highlights were 74 breakout sessions, 28 roundtables, 16 {code} Theater talks, and 14 hands-on labs workshops—all fueling the enthusiasm of attendees.

Morning Fuel:
With 1,353 liters of coffee and thousands of pastries consumed, the energy level remained high. The surprise popcorn station in the afternoon added a whimsical touch.

  1. Automate vSphere Patching with PowerShell and GitHub Actions [CMTY1917BCN]
    • When: Wednesday, 6 Nov, 13:00 – 13:25 CET
    • Overview: This session focused on simplifying and automating the often cumbersome vSphere patching process. Using PowerShell scripts and GitHub Actions, I provided attendees with practical steps and live demonstrations to optimize patch management workflows. The audience’s engagement during the Q&A underscored the growing interest in automation tools.
  1. The ABCs of Community and Advocacy [INVP1251BCN]
    • When: Wednesday, 6 Nov, 14:00 – 14:45 CET
    • Overview: Advocacy and community-building are vital in today’s IT landscape. In this session, I shared strategies to foster meaningful professional connections and elevate one’s influence within the tech world. Attendees left inspired to take their community engagement efforts to the next level.

Evening Celebration:
The Expo Bash brought flamenco stilt walkers, delectable bites, and beverages to the forefront. It was the perfect prelude to The Party, which transformed the venue into a space-themed wonderland. Highlights included live music from the RPJ Band, a 360-degree photo booth, and international cuisine that catered to all palates.


Day 4: Wrapping Up on a High Note

The final day provided a mix of in-depth sessions and interactive labs, ensuring attendees left with actionable takeaways. Discussions centered around VMware’s future direction, addressing real-world IT challenges with innovative solutions.
