How to update firmware remotely using the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) web interface

Lately I receive a quite few questions about how to update iDrac. Hence I decide to make this article. This article will show you how to update iDRAC7, iDRAC8 and iDRAC9 web interface.

Before upgrade, you need to download the firmware image to a location on the local system:

  • Go to DELL website and look for the version of iDRAC you are looking for :

How to update firmware with the iDRAC7 or iDRAC8 web interface

  1. Log into iDRAC
  2. Go to Go to Overview > iDRAC Settings > Update and Rollback. The Firmware Update page is displayed
  3. On the Update tab, select Local as the File Location.
  4. Click Browse, select the firmware image file for the required component, and then click Upload.
  1. After the upload is complete, the Update Details section displays each firmware file that is uploaded to iDRAC and its status. If the firmware image file is valid and was successfully uploaded, the Contents column displays a (+) icon next to the firmware image file name. Expand the name to view the Device NameCurrent, and Available firmware version information.
  2. Click on Install.
  3. Click Job Queue to display the Job Queue page, where you can view and manage your pending firmware updates. You can also click OK to refresh the current page and view the status of the firmware update.

How to update firmware with the iDRAC9 web interface

  1. Log into the iDRAC9 web interface.
  2. Go to Maintenance > System Update. The Manual Update page is displayed.
  3. On the Manual Update tab, select Local as the Location Type.
  2. Click Install
  3. Click Job Queue to display the Job Queue page, where you can view and manage your pending firmware updates. You can also click OK to refresh the current page and view the status of the firmware update.

Sometimes your iDRAC version is missing dependencies:

Sometimes you may see this error message:

SYS275: Unable to apply the firmware file iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_WGTYV_WN64_5.00.20.10_A.EXE because the firmware update prerequisite iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_G6W0W_WN64_3.30.30.30_A00.EXE is not installed.

NOTE: version numbers can vary

In that case you need to:

  1. Go to DELL support page
  2. Download missing version
  3. Upload missing version like before
  4. Install missing version
  1. After installation, continue to install newer version
